Internationally recognized for his contributions to theory and practice in the field of anthropology, George McClelland Foster has for more than 50 years specialized, generalized, and applied his insights in order to deepen our understanding of human behavior. Striking out boldly in new directions, he helped to develop the fields of applied anthropology and medical anthropology in the post-World War II period. Through more than 40 years of fieldwork in the community of Tzintzuntzan in rural Mexico, he has stimulated new ways to comprehend the transformation of contemporary societies in the developing world. In more than 250 publications, including more than 20 books and monographs, his influence on the development of the social sciences around the world has been and continues to be extraordinary. The integrity of the work, like the man, stands as an exemplar. In recognition of his scientific, academic, and professional contributions to the social sciences in America and beyond, Southern Methodist University is proud to confer upon George McClelland Foster the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
